In typical fashion the night before I left for Thredbo Farkin's server decided to play hide and seek (vanished). Strangely this exact same problem occured 12 months ago when I left for Thredbo last year. I've been back for 20 mins after 2 solid days of driving, so please be patient as I fix things.

Unfortunately I have been informed of Greg Wilson passing away, after a long fight with a brain tumour, on Sunday 11th December, 2005. Greg was a downhill Masters rider based in Blaxland with Western Sydney Mountain Bike Club and some sponsorship from Blackman Bicycles. He started riding in 1998. He will always be remembered by his immaculate white Bear bike, practicing Old Bathurst Road, although Greg started on a Craftworks HRC6, then to a Black Giant then the Bear and finally an Orange. Greg was very particular about his bikes and always took great care to look after then, he even walked back up the Megalong Valley track, as the trailers may scratch his bike on the rough road. Greg acted as mentor to Eddie Piddington during his downhill career, taking Eddie to races and practicing with him. There was nothing Greg would not have a go at on a downhill track, besides the Old Bathurst Road gap! However, he surprised all the younger riders by taking the Ourimbah short track road gap.

Greg achieved a third in the 2004 World Masters Games in Masters 5 in Canada and finished in the top 10 in the 2003 World Masters Games in Masters 4. He was National Masters 3+ Champion and Series winner and a State Champion and Series winner in Masters 3+. Greg moved to Queensland in 2003 and continued racing and in the 2004–5 Nationals winning the Queensland Round and the Eildon National Champion. He was still racing when diagnosed with the brain tumour. Thank you Greg, and our sympathy to Jill his wife.

Adelaide Advocacy Action Alert...alliteration ahoy!
(3 comments) (link) Monday, 5-December-2005  09:55 AM - by Ryan
Represent! Christmas is the time of giving and what would be more fitting that giving back to the sport that gives you so much? We have 4 issues on the horizon. Sign up for all or just pick one. Don't just sit on your arse and whine though.

Issue 1: MITCHAM;
Mitcham Council will vote on the 13th of December on the Draft MTB plan to put legal DH,XC and FR trails in 9 areas. We've been lucky enough to have a pro-active council who are forward thinking enough to see the benefits of managing MTBing rather than banning. It's looking bright for MTBing in the area, but we can't be complacent and the MTBing community needs to support the council, nothing would be sadder than the legal trails not getting up because the MTBing community couldn't be bothered showing their support for the plan. Email travis@bikefanatic.com to find out how you can help. We're particularly interested in people who live in the Mitcham area.

Issue 2: EAGLE QUARRY; When's it going to open to the public? Coming from the warped minds of Trails Solutions Australia which employ some of Adelaides most talented trail builders, the DH run alone will blow peoples minds. If/When it is complete this will be a world class facility. The future is in your hands. There has been no ongoing commintment by the current government to open this facility, sure maybe talk, but as the saying goes "Money talks, Bullshit ......" again email: travis@bikefanatic.com to find out how you can help.

Issue 3: TRAIN RUNS; With the weather fining up and school holidays the trains from Mitcham to Belair will be under increasing strain. A viable solution would be to put on more carriages to cope with the demand, but it seems Trans Adelaide would prefer just to simply refuse riders entry onto trains. Want to get this changed? Again email travis@bikefanatic.com to find out how you can help. If you are out doing runs with your mates and you get bumped. Please lodge a complaint. It's one of the few ways that things will change.

Also, let the Minister for Transport know of the issue. Perhaps asking why youth engaging in healthy activity are constantly being discouraged from exercising by the government.

Issue 4:ANTSEY HILL RESERVE; North of the city out Tea Tree Plaza way there is a draft plan underway to put some legal trails in. Submissions close December 15th for this plan and we need people submit feedback supporting the plan, so it can go to the next stage. It will take 5 minutes out of your life, we've done all the work for you, but without support at this stage, it will never get off the ground.

The plan is long, but here's the link: http://www.environment.sa.gov.au/par...p_draft_mp.pdf

2 options;
1 - Write your own quick letter supporting the plan.
2 - Cut and Paste this drafted letter inserting your name

Either way, make sure you email it to:
irving.jason@saugov.sa.gov.au

If you've done one/all of the above, well done some Christmas cheer coming your way this year.

300 Riders Set For Brindabella Challenge Point To Point MTB Race
(0 comments) (link) Friday, 2-December-2005  5:24 PM - by Scott
Release:
Over 300 keen cyclists are expected to line up for the major mountain biking component of this years Brindabella Challenge, the 55 Km Point to Point on Saturday December 3rd.

“Having over 300 cyclists in this one event, with well over half of these from interstate, is fantastic and shows how popular Canberra is as a destination for the mountain biking public” Canberra Off-Road Cyclists President Dr Katrina Roper said today.

“The beauty about these types of mass participation events is that an average rider can pit themselves against the best that Australia has to offer including the likes of Australian representatives and Canberra locals Niki Fisher and Dylan Cooper” Race Director Ley Kingdom said today.

“This course will be scenic, challenging but achievable. It will climb from the Cotter reserve to 1200m above sea level before returning to the Cotter. It will include some tough climbs but the second half is punctuated by some fabulous long fast descents” Ms Kingdom said.

Conditions will include a range of surfaces from smooth fire road to some rough rocky sections.

Registration for the race will open at the Cotter Reserve from 8am with the race starting at 10am. The first competitors are expected to return to the Cotter at ~ 12.30pm

“We have some of the best riding spots in the country including the phenomenal Sparrow Hill and with the government supporting our sport through events such as the Brindabella Challenge and funding the construction of Stromlo Forest Park, Canberra will continue to grow as a mountain biking Mecca” Dr Roper Said

A recent study has shown that more bikes are sold in Australia each year than cars (around 1.2 million in total) and that ~80% of bikes sold are mountain bikes.
Visit the Brindabella Challenge website for more information.
