Renee Junga BMX Fundraiser Update
(0 comments) (link) Thursday, 26-October-2006  3:11 PM - by Scott
Just an update, Mountain Bikers with MTBA licences will be allowed to race without having to purchase a day licence. You only need to pay the race entry.

Also, NSW have had their day and have thrown down a challenge to the QLD event to beat more than 230 riders. If we lose, Kent Elliot has to eat a jar of cockroaches (not sure if that's the best motivation, QLD'ers will want to see him eat them as well).

It's a good cause, go here for more details.

Sydney Olympic Park will be ready
(13 comments) (link) Wednesday, 18-October-2006  8:17 PM - by Squidly Didly
The Bicycling Australia Mountain Cross at Sydney Olympic Park
– Round 1 of the MTBA National Mountain Bike Series
– Hosted by Western Sydney Mountain Bike Club

It’s less than 3 days until the gates drop at the Monster Mountain Cross Course at Sydney Olympic Park for the opening event of the MTBA National Mountain Bike Series – The Bicycling Australia Mountain Cross!

It’s back, and it’ll be as big an event as it was in 2005! Features include:

- $5000 in prizemoney, including $1000 to the winner of the Elite Male category
- The SOPA big screen, with all finals shown live to screen so you can follow all of the action
- The best MCs in the nation – Paul King and Brett Barnes on the mic
- Australia’s 2nd-largest MTB Club, Western Sydney, pulling the strings to make the event happen
- AMX running the racing itself, and hey – they’ve helped MTBA develop this sport!

Entries are open online until 2pm Friday, and late-entries are also available at the event – during registration on the Friday afternoon (4pm – 6pm) and the Saturday morning (7am – 10am).

Right now the track is ready for final preparations tomorrow and Friday leading up to practice on Friday afternoon and racing on Saturday. There’s a bit of deep quarry sand out there in places, which has been there since the major track maintenance and overhaul weekend 3 weeks ago. The sand has been there to trap any moisture that does land on the track during these hot weeks we’ve had – and help that moisture bind to the track. The excess sand will removed before race-day and the track will be regularly watered, providing a fast, grippy surface for loads of fun & exciting racing on Saturday!

We at WSMTB Club can’t wait for the event – and we hope all of the riders can’t wait either!

Read on below for the formal press release from MTBA…

SYDNEY - The National Mountain Bike Series gets underway with both Mountain Cross and Olympic Cross Country this weekend. Mountain Cross starts on Saturday at Sydney Olympic Park on the Monster Track and has attracted many BMX riders that are training towards the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

National Mountain Cross Champion, Wade Bootes (Gold Coast) will be out to prove his “Bradbury finish” was no mistake. In the National final in Thredbo, all four riders crashed just metres from the finish, Bootes won when he carried his bike across the line. Currently ranked 5th in the World, Bootes will be up against fellow BMX riders as well as mountain bike riders like Amiel Cavalier, former World Downhill Champion.

Alex Lloyd (St Mary’s) is back to defend the title this year. “I’m not sure if I should worry about Bootes. I know the track well and just love the atmosphere,” he said.

With four riders in the final line up, riders like Luke Strom and Ricky Boyer, both from Blaxland could have an impact.

The women’s race is wide open with Sydney sider, Grace Ireland (Mt Annan) out to defend her title from the current National Mountain Cross Champion, Caroline Buchanan (Canberra).

Finals get underway at 4 pm on Saturday afternoon with over 25 000 people expected to head to Sydney Olympic Park over the weekend’s Festival of Cycling.

Farkiners represent on the 'Gong
(24 comments) (link) Wednesday, 18-October-2006  12:57 AM - by Techno Destructo
Join Team Farkin on the Sydney to the Gong ride! Nov. 5th!
Supporting MS charity, Farkin makes it's dubious debut, messin' up the scene with our rag-tag, motley-crew, completely inappropriate and bizarre group of people. In true Farkin fashion, we'll be rolling with some of the most inappropriate choices for bikes that you can choose. DH, DJ, SS, BMX, fixies, you name it. In fact, the dumber the choice of bike, the more props you'll score from the Farkin community (ONLY if you finish, though!!!)

Join here:
http://register.gongride.org.au/?Team+Farkin

Here's quick details:
Site with all the info: http://www.gongride.org.au/
Price: $50 ($60 if you register on the day)
Distance: 90km or 56km
You can buy lunch ($10) at the start or at the end.
You can buy an easy return ticket $25
There are special trains running from Wollongong back to Sydney on the day for the event.
You can buy package deals with registration, shirt or jersey, and a lunch.

There will be a lot of Farkin crew there, on bikes dumber than what you have, unless you think you can beat us!

I'll be filming the whole thing, hopefully we'll have Farkin T-shirts for the event and stickers too! Not sure how much the T-shirts will sell for yet. We'll try to do them as affordable as possible. (obviously making no profit from them).....

Farkin sold.... bwhahaha, you guys are too easy. Just jokes people...

Scott 24 Hour Race Video
(12 comments) (link) Friday, 13-October-2006  7:19 PM - by johnny
Canberra Off-Road Cyclists and APIS Consulting together ran Australia's largest, and quite possibly the world's largest, 24 hour mountain bike race last weekend, the 2006 Scott 24 hour.

Sam Davies has been enlisted by APIS to create a short video for the event, and he's finally finished it. He started with nearly 15 hours of footage and far less sleep, but has got it down to a roughly 9 minute video for your viewing pleasure. It's a tad over 30 MB.

Check out the event aftermath here (as well as see where the video was originally posted).

2006 Singlespeed National Championships
(5 comments) (link) Wednesday, 11-October-2006  12:57 AM - by Squidly Didly
We love to ride, we simply love to ride and we simply love to ride simple. What is more enjoyable than pulling your perfect line through a descent, nailing the quick transition into a climb and then when the swarm of angry bees in your freewheel give you the chance spinning your way to the top of a glorious vista without ever once having to think, "what gear am I in?" I don't care how many gears you have or haven't got, everyone loves that. On the point of not caring we are not about excluding people either. Age, sex, colour, creed, mechanical proclivity, we want it all. WE WANT YOU.

Which is why if you have gears you should come, pick a gear and let the expert mechanics from Shimano, Cannondale and CBD Cycles (with the help of 3M) convert you for the weekend. You never know, you might like it.

There's also a surly frame care of Dirt Works for the best costume in the main race and a sweet Rigid GT Peace single speed for the best and fairest across the weekend. Also heaps of products from Cannondale and White Lightening.

Mt. Stromlo - The best place to ride in the world.
(0 comments) (link) Tuesday, 10-October-2006  10:01 PM - by demo man
Well the time has come around again to head back up the hill and keep on rollin' on with buiding the Stromlo MTB Park. The next working bee is scheduled for 21 and 22 October (weekend after next) and will include more work on polishing the backbone trail as well as downhill track work. As in the previous ones we'll feed you and arm you with tools if you don't have any yourself.

We really need a HUGE turnout over the next couple of working bees. With the windy weather of last month putting a halt to some of the work on the Sunday, and rain causing a few more days to go by the way side, there is a fair bit of catching up to do. I'm sure you'll all agree that the more track we have at the end the better it will be - so help get the kilometre count back on track and come along with anyone else you can muster. And by helping to build them you will also get the earliest glimpses of the stuff that may make up the 2007 Scott 24hr course.

BUT, we know you want MORE. So for a limited time there is unlimited opportunity to head up the hill and help out Glen and the boys with the world class DH track he is building. Glen has indicated that he and the team will be working this and every weekend on the Downhill Trail, and welcomes helpers (even during the week). So if you have not had the chance to put in some hours yet, or are keen to go above and beyond in the trail building arena then grab your shovel, put on your gloves and help Glen and CORC pull together the best DH course in the world. Seriously, if you have not had the chance to put some hours into Stromlo yet then here it is.

For the scheduled working bee on 21 and 22 Oct the process is same as before - let us know if you intend coming along and on what day (stromloNOSPAM@corc.asn.au - remove the NOSPAM before sending). This helps us with the catering and the tools. If you are keen to head up there outside of the scheduled working bees to help out then give Glen J himself a ring on 0407 674 943 to tee up a time and place to meet him.

Hope to either see you there at the working bee, or to check out your unscheduled handywork next time the (hopeful) masses converge on the mountain.

General info on the Mt. Stromlo development can be found here.

A recent mini-documentary of the project has also been made, downloadable from the thumbnail below.

See you all at the working bees.
