Mt Stromlo Mountain Cross Update
(23 comments) (link) Monday, 13-November-2006  8:35 PM - by Squidly Didly
Australia’s largest and newest professionally designed Mountain Cross track is under way. Construction started today on this huge monster at Stromlo Forest park, by Glen Jacobs and the team at MV Australia.

Soaking up approximately 100 thousand cubic metres of soil, Glen made sure the man made structure could be seen from the other side of the city. It would have to be the largest mountain bike dirt design ever undertaken in Australia.

MV Australia specially flew in a Melbourne machine operator to attack this unique project.

"The latest Mountain Cross technology will feature in the new track with guaranteed passing, multiple lines, exciting options and pure mountain bike racing."

The course will be open for test racing at the Brindabella Challenge in December.

The press release from Pedal Power ACT:

Pedal Power today expressed its deep sorrow at the death of Paul Harty, an entrant in Fitz’s Challenge cycle event on the weekend.
Two cyclists, Paul Harty and Matt Huxtable, crashed during the event at Fitz’s Hill, 14km south of Tharwa on Sunday. The riders were seriously injured and were taken to hospital by ambulance on the day. Paul Harty subsequently died in Canberra Hospital.

Pedal Power spokesman, Tony Shields, said ‘Cyclists love their cycling, and to have someone die doing what they love doing hits home to all cyclists. On behalf of all the volunteers who organised the Fitz’s Challenge event, all the riders in the event and anybody who loves cycling we express our deepest sympathy to Paul’s family and friends.’
‘There were a record 546 entrants in the ride. This is the 19th year Fitz’s Challenge has been run and this is the first time something like this has happened,’ said Mr Shields.

There were no witnesses to the accident. ‘The investigation into the cause of the accident is in the hands of the experts, the police,’ said Mr Shields. ‘We have a risk management plan which was put into place as soon as the accident occurred.’

Matt Huxtable is in care at the Prince of Wales Hospital. ‘We express our deepest wishes for a speedy recovery for Matt.’

Pedal Power has over 1500 members and its mission is ‘More Canberrans cycling,
